Should I get a mechanical or computerized sewing machine?

I currently have a mechanical sewing machine that I purchased about 15 years ago. I would like to upgrade but I'm not all into embroidery and such. I just want to use it to sew over any fabric and maybe have a few more interesting stitches than a zig zag. What do you suggest. I am a novice at sewing so I want something good.

My personal preference is for electronic machines -- I like the full punching force of the needle at even the slowest sewing speed, and the stepper motors are the reason you get that full punching force at slow speeds. I also find the adjustable needle positions very handy.

I know you're going to hear that electronic/computerized machines don't last as long as mechanicals (true, some of the mechanicals are 150 years old now) but with the advances in sewing technology, do you really think you'll want to hang on to a machine more than 15-30 years? If you advance in sewing skills, do you think you'll still want the same machine in 15 years? Most of the folks I know seem to trade theirs out at 10-20 year intervals -- often because they wanted something the old machine didn't have, not because the old machine died. So I think the "won't last forever" argument is somewhat of a red herring. On the other hand, if you want a machine to hand down to the great grandkids, then you probably want a mechanical.

Go try out some machines at a dealer or three. Bring some nasty to sew fabrics. Think about what you want to be able to do that you can't now. (Suggested reading: Carol Ahles book, Fine Machine Sewing and Nancy Bednar's Encyclopedia of Sewing Machine Techniques). Make buttonholes. Sew through elastic, Blindhem. Ask to see a demonstration of f a g o t i n g (Yahoo is blocking the word -- it's the joining stitch between two hemmed pieces of fabric, commonly used in heirloom sewing. Viking (mis-)calls it "Spanish hemstitch"). Do some bobbin work with something lumpy, like a fine boucle yarn.

Go really wild and try a serger.

Play.

One or two machines will stand out in your mind after awhile. See what other folks are saying about the model at patternreview.com or similar venues. Go try them again, head to head. One of them will probably follow you home.

Most of my sewing is garment construction, much of it on the serger now. But the stitches I use on the sewing machine (mine is a 14 year old Viking electronic with 30 stitches) are the usual suspects: straight, zigzag, triple zigzag, blind hem, stretch blindhem, stretch, shirt buttonhole and keyhole buttonhole. Which is pretty much the list that most people use.

Have fun shopping!
